Studio Engineer Motorcycles - Competitive Rate - Leicestershire - 3-6 Months (potential to extend)
Job Requirement:
The role of Concept & Studio Engineer is tailored to a “creative engineer” with high quality design skills. Working amongst a diverse team spanning the UK and overseas locations, you will be influential in the creative stages of the development of new motorcycles. The aim is to use the product requirements, outlined by product strategy and concept engineering, to explore and define, using a variety of methods, a suitable product architecture and appropriate level of physical experience. You are able to quickly create compelling digital models: supporting the Industrial Design and concept engineering team in transferring the design from 2D sketch to digital CAD / CAS, understanding design requirements and realising them with a high degree of sensitivity to surface, form and finish. You will be proficient in outputting these 3D models in NURBS surfaces or Parametric solid models. With a strong 3D digital modelling experience and a solid understanding of automotive engineering/model engineering, you’ll build and develop the digital models needed to deliver. Your main goal will be solving specific design problems and working on whole system designs; flair, aesthetic judgement and creativity are therefore essential. The ability to work positively in a team will be the real key to your success.
Key Responsibilities
You will work with the other members of the Product Strategy and Concept team, along with designers from the Industrial Design team to generate and present new product concept ideas for, and to, senior management; allowing product planning to react quickly to develop robust product specifications prior to a project being released to an engineering design team to carry out detailed engineering work. You will create these initial concept vehicle schemes based on your own creative engineering judgement, target data from benchmarking activities and ergonomic requirements. You will develop early styling underlay models based on target dimensions, (i.e. creation of zones defining boundaries for required seat height, reach , knee clearance, luggage fitment etc.) working with Industrial Design to resolve any early conflicts between initial concept package requirements and potential Industrial Design theme. Where deviations from current methodology or new concepts require validation, it is the responsibility of Concept
Engineer to investigate and if required, carry out physical testing / analysis, then present the results to show confidence in the design.
Your responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to;
- Translating strategic and functional objectives into technical requirements,
- Developing and enhancement of existing methods and process,
- Establishing target BOM and investment prices for new vehicle programmes,
- Identify cost reduction opportunities and mass saving opportunities
- Technical benchmarking and analysis of competitive vehicles.
- Supporting the Studio Design Team to enable the delivery of surfaces representative of the design intent while integrating engineering constraints
- Work directly with the Physical Modelling and Engineering teams to develop 3D Digital model data for presentation models and prototypes.
- Generate High Integrity data as necessary – ideally to defined “A” class standard – i.e. suitable for transfer into other CAD systems (principally Creo)
- Produce parametric models natively in Creo
You will generate value with your ideas and solutions and demonstrate high quality standards for yourself and other people. You communicate openly, clearly, and coherently and are able to quickly establish a successful cooperation with others. You will be expected to work effectively within the team and be prepared to debate and input into
various topics regarding the product. As an individual you should have an unusual blend of creativity, a keen eye for aesthetic quality, and an understanding of the technical limitations. You should not be afraid to use your imagination and present your ideas. You should be ambitious and keen to learn and absorb the information around you.
There will be stretched timescales and compressed activities where you will be expected to manage and police key legislative requirements, product requirement targets and hard points. There is a need to keep abreast of technical developments within the automotive industry, with particular reference to the evolution of competitor products.
Skills Required:
- At least three years experience in automotive OEM or independent studio working with OEM
- Experience in parametric solid modelling (Creo) to high standard
- A strong degree of engineering experience
- Proven record of bringing motorcycle, scooter or automotive digital models to styling sign-off will be a definite advantage
- Outputting digital models by rapid prototype output to SLS, SLA, etc.
- Experience in clay / foam milling a plus
- A passion for motorcycles and familiarity with the motorcycle market
- Ability to be working on a wide variety of components at one time, balancing workload and prioritising to create the optimum output.
- Can do attitude. Should have initiative and confidence to “get stuck in” and get 'hands dirty'.
Skills Preferred:
- Experience in concept modelling and A class modelling
- Experience in 3D scanning & surfacing of scan data is a plus modelling (Alias)
