Role context and purpose:
Our Motorcycle client is looking for a talented Project Engineer to be part of the wider Genuine Motorcycle Accessories Design Team, taking the lead on specific projects and components, helping to shape the future of the product portfolio. The ideal candidate will have experience in defining major components, assemblies and systems from concept to production, ensuring fulfilment of product attributes and requirements against targets. Candidates should be able to apply and propagate design and development experience throughout the projects and manage the workload and technical development of a small group of engineers, assisting the Design Team Leader in effectively managing the team.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage key aspects of new model development product range.
- Ownership and coordination of product development and testing activities to support both
- Support and mentor a small team (1-3 people) of Design Engineers across two global locations
- Ensuring that drawings are checked for accordance to client standards as well as ASME Y14.5-2009 prior to their release.
- Plan and oversee the timely delivery of many product subassemblies or systems within the requirements of the company's New Product Introduction (NPI) system.
- Design systems and components for new and updated motorcycle projects, considering function, cost, manufacture, assembly and quality.
- Produce good quality 3D CAD models using Creo.
- Produce good quality 2D engineering drawings to a high standard in accordance with ASME Y14.5 - 2009, including GD&T
- Follow and help maintain design, operational and quality procedures.
- Produce supporting documentation for designs, as required and defined, such as tolerance stacks, bolted joint calculations, tooling access and DFM considerations.
- Liaise with internal departments such as, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality and Assembly, as well as externally to the GMA team such as: Chassis Teams, Chassis Development, CAE and Test Teams
- Liaise with external international suppliers, to ensure all designs are inline with target costs as well as supplier capabilities.
- Manage time and workload effectively.
- Represent the design team or PD department in interdepartmental meetings in the absence of the Design Team Leader.
- May manage the delivery of a product range for launch with new models or derivative motorcycles.
- Assist in drafting & updating design and development procedures.
Success Metrics:
You will be measured on OTIF delivery on various goals and performance indicators. These will depend on the focus area for the year. Overall success of your role will depend on the following measures but not limited to project relationships and gateway deliverables.
- Demonstrates good time management and excellent knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
- Strong technical leadership and coaching skills.
- Ability to manage the technical requirements of multiple accessory projects simultaneously.
Scope & Impact:
You will have a contributing role in the specification, design and development of a range of new motorcycle accessories. You will have personal responsibility for components, assemblies and systems, as well as their interaction with chassis and engine teams. Initially, you will assist the design team lead and lead engineers by supporting and mentoring the junior engineers in the team, with further scope to directly manage a team of 1-2 engineers on a new motorcycle project.
Skills / Experience Required:
Educational qualifications:
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline. Minimum of 2:1 required.
- Proficient in 3D CAD, preferably Pro-engineer / Creo.
Experience Level:
- Past experience in engineering design of components and subassemblies.
- Good knowledge of manufacturing processes.
- Experience of creating and releasing 2D technical drawings to ASME Y14.5-2009
- Understanding of geometric tolerances on 2D drawings. to ASME Y14.5-2009
- Good understanding of motorcycle layout and construction.
- Practical experience of vehicle maintenance and preparation is advantageous.
- Some experience in designing to Regulatory requirements as applied to motorcycles.
Attributes:
- Should be able to demonstrate good time management and excellent knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
- Good understanding of the design requirements for mass production manufacturing
- Good technical comprehension of at least some areas of chassis layout, design & development.
- Past experience in analysis and optimisation of components and subassemblies preferred
